Swedan
Herbal steam therapy that softens stiffness, reduces heaviness, and helps oil treatments reach deeper. It is used for joints, Kapha congestion, and as preparation for Panchakarma.
About this treatment
Swedana induces therapeutic sweating after oiling. Heat liquefies Kapha, calms Vata stiffness, and opens srotas so medicines and oils work better. Forms include local nadi sweda (steam on a joint) and more general herbal steam, always within comfort, never to the point of exhaustion.
At Vishwashree Clinic, Swedan follows Abhyangam for arthritis, backache, frozen shoulder, and Kapha heaviness. It is also Poorva karma before Vaman, Virechan, or Basti. Herbs in the steam are chosen for the condition. Time and temperature are watched so Pitta people do not overheat.
Who it may help
- Stiff joints, lumbar pain, and cervical tightness
- Kapha heaviness, sluggishness, and cold-type swelling
- Before a main Panchakarma procedure
- Muscle tightness after strain, once acute inflammation has settled
Care at Vishwashree Clinic
High fever, uncontrolled hypertension, pregnancy, and acute Pitta skin rashes may exclude general steam. Drink warm water after, avoid immediate cold AC, and rest briefly. Local steam can still be used when full-body heat is not suitable.
- Always after suitable oleation unless the physician says otherwise
- Local or general steam as indicated
- Timed sitting with comfort as the limit
- After-care to prevent Vata from cold exposure
